Introducing Hydrogen Bond!

WHAT IS A HYDROGEN BOND?

A hydrogen bond is an intermolecular force that is formed when a hydrogen bonds with either Fluorine(F), Oxygen (O), or Nitrogen (N). Why do hydrogen bond only happen to these three molecules? The key to answering this question lies within the property of boiling points.

As we can see on the image above, molecules that have hydrogen that bonds with F,O, or N have a significantly higher boiling point than the rest. Boiling points can be used determine the strength of a bond because a higher boiling point requires a strong intermolecular force to holds the molecule together under extreme heat (Clark, 2000).
